Manic Monday

R.I.P. Darrent Williams. Regards go out to his grieving family, friends and teammates.

It's crazy that stuff like this happens in everyday life, let alone sports. Allows you to reflect on the more important things.

Tomorrow will be our first blog entry about the Brooklyn College Basketball teams and their Wednesday night match-up against City Tech. We'll give some opening insight before the games and uncensored analysis after the games

Two NFL coaches get the ax today, as Denny Green and Jim Mora Jr. are the latest to go on the unemployment line. It looks like Michael Vick really was a coach killer. Falcons have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball but until Vick can become a better pocket passer (and at this point that's questionable) he'll be nothing more than an option quarterback who throws 95% of the time to Alge Crumpler. Atlanta needs to get a coach that can maximize the talent that Vick has and somehow get those underachieving receivers to make some big plays.

I honestly think the Cardinals job is a nice gig for whoever gets it. There's a ton of young talent on both sides of the ball and in the NFC you can be a Super Bowl contender in no time. They need to blow up their offensive line, lack consistency defensively and above all else, seemingly have this stigma of being losers that's been really hard to get rid of. Ron Rivera and Norm Chow are two guys who will be interviewed for the position.

Surprisingly results in the Bowl games. Didn't Michigan would lose to USC nor did I think Boise State would put up a fight against Oklahoma. For whatever reason, my interest in college football has waned in the past few years and I don't know why. But I'm sure some of the other guys would love to write about it and you will see other posts written by people not named Lucky in the very near future.

Back tomorrow with more...

All this talk about Michigan getting hosed from the National championship Game...where was their defense against USC and Ohio State? Where was their offense at all against USC? Did Lloyd Carr even bother gameplanning against USC's outstanding linebacking corps? Hopefully the Michigan loss will put all their homer fans to rest.

I give Vick some credit for this season. He did improve as a pocket passer. Had his worst completion percentage as a starter, but threw a career-high 20 touchdowns. Without knowing the names, compare these two players:

Player A: 3,515 total yards, 22 touchdowns, 16 total turnovers.

Player B: 3,631 total yards, 24 touchdowns, 16 total turnovers.

Not too different, huh? Player A is Vick and Player B is Tom Brady.

Vick isn't near Brady's level as a quarterback, but their seasons were comparable. Both were flanked by mediocrity at wide receiver and saw their tight end as the most reliable option. The biggest difference was New England's defense ranked 2nd and Atlanta's was just 0.2 points per game better than the Cinci's.

That said, I can't say Vick cost Mora Jr. his job. The team underacheiving did, and some bad luck. On offense, Vick isn't consistently accurate and doesn't see the whole field, the receivers can't run routes or catch and the offensive line, which had been great, took a huge step back. On defense, Patrick Kerney got hurt, so that's -10 sacks and good run defense. Ed Hartwell, the MLB, missed half the season. Keith Brooking hasn't been as good since he moved to OLB. Lawyer Milloy in coverage is almost as bad as Roy Williams. And if John Abraham could play 2 snaps without snapping something...

Even then, I thought it was a short leash for Jimbo. They went to the NFC Championship Game his first year and he was considered one of the "bright young coaches." And the stuff that happened this year can't all be blamed on him. I also think that the radio show interview kinda sealed the deal. Even if he was joking (I can't imagine he'd be stupid enough to have been serious), you can't go on the air when your team is sucking and say you want another job - one that's not even vacant. He disrespected the Falcons and Ty Willingham. Had he not said it, I think he's still got the job.

Green also got a short leash. He was there for 3 seasons, and that wasn't a team we expected to be good. THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE - a bad team. When you've got the 29th ranked defense, the worst offensive line in football and either Kurt Warner or Matt Leinart at QB, you're not supposed to do well. That team is at least 2 seasons away from being competitive.

But that's how it goes in the NFL.

btw - Nick Saban basically said, "To hell with pride and my image" and went paper chasin'. Can't blame him. I'd sell my pride for $32 million. But they better hope he's got hypnotic powers and can convince top recruits to turn down Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU and Auburn. The SEC doesn't allow for much wiggle room.

P.S. My interest in college football has waned, too. Because The U ain't puttin' it down like they're supposed to. The game isn't as exciting when you're not watching future Pro Bowlers roll on teams for 40 points. I don't even think the Hurricanes have a 1st rounder this year. Greg Olsen will probably be the first one drafted, and I don't think he goes higher than 2nd round in a weak TE class.

I expected Michigan to win, too. I never thought USC was that strong this year. I thought they'd have folded against a true powerhouse who could out-talent them. The Wolverines just didn't show up. Maybe the game didn't mean enough to them. After the Ohio State loss and then losing the #2 spot to Florida, maybe it was too much disappointment to rebound from. The whole year they were thinking National Championship, then to get slapped and wind up playing in one of the 200 consolation prize games, it's a bummer. No excuse though.

Oklahoma, I think, lost too much too quickly. On that team of 2-3 years ago, the o-line had a bunch of hugs, many of whom are now in the NFL. Jamaal Brown got selected to the Pro Bowl this year. Jason White was the Peyton Manning of NCAA. After 6 years and a bunch of knee injuries, he finally graduated. Mark Clayton and Mark Bradley both came out. With as much talent as they had (stomping teams 77-0), they didn't get as much done as they should've. Now they're rebuilding. And they lost their QB because of a part-time job scam. It's injury-prone Adrian Peterson and nothing else. I hadn't followed Boise State, and I probably picked OU to win, but it didn't surprise me that they lost. It was more surprising that they were in a position to choke. And I still haven't seen the highlights from that game.
