Sugar, We're Going Down Pitchin'

First and last reference to emo rock.

Well, Randall David Johnson, we hardly knew ye. He's sent packing back to Arizona for four pitchers including the Luis Vizcaino and three minor leaguers. 34 wins, came up small in the postseason and couldn't stop being a total jerk and lout. Bon Voyage, Randy. You will not be missed. You can read the particulars here:

To actually get something for a 43-year-old pitcher would a bad back is something. It shows that pitching stinks in baseball and it's also another example of Brian Cashman exerting control over the Yankee organization. He's stockpiled young, power arms in the system that could potentially be dealt for a big pitcher or bat in July and made the Yankees more dangerous. The rotation as it currently stands has Wang, Mussina, Pettitte, Igawa and Pavano, which is not terrible, but also isn't the Braves rotation of the mid 90's. Expect the Yanks to run after Roger Clemens or make a trading run for John Smoltz during the trading deadline.

It's not the only Yankee related news of the day, as they're close to signing Doug M-I-E-N-T-K-I-E-W-I-C-Z. Props to those with long last names like Doug and I. Here's the report, courtesy of the Post:

Not a bad move, the Yankees need a glove more than a bat.

The Mets are looking for new pitchers, going after Tomo Ohka and Jeff Weaver. You can start puking now as a Met fan.

Ohka is famous for a mention in a Simpsons episode, along with the immortal Estaban Yan. He'll be steady for you, but not much else.

The coaching carousel continues in the NFL. Art Shell was put out of his misery in Oak-town, Nick Saban got shown the money and went to Bama and Bill Cowher is going to retire after 15 years in Pittsburgh.

In hindsight, Cowher would have been better off retiring last year with Jerome Bettis, on top of the world as world champions. But to each his own. Ken Wisenhunt and Russ Grimm are the top in-house candidates to replace him.

We'll have some BC basketball on the next post.

Ohka's actually been solid over the last few years...I wouldn't mind picking him up for added depth.
